The Real Meaning Behind My Hidden Door Pieces
Share
Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated with doors.
Opening doors to little worlds of wonder and uncovering magic just hidden on the other side - like that scene from Alice in Wonderland where she opens a door to reveal another door that reveals another door, and so on.
Or even the amazing magic of inanimate objects brought to life with a cupboard and a key. *Cough* Indian in the Cupboard *Cough*
But that fascination followed me into adulthood- and I had this little idea that kept gnawing its way out of my brain and into my studio.
A secret door that is hidden inside a painting- and when you open it…
It reveals a little message, reminding you to come back to yourself and love on yourself hard.
Because if there is one thing that I sure miss from my childhood, it’s that feeling of absolute weightlessness before the world shamed me with societal expectations. The feeling of dancing and staining my pants on the grass with wild abandon, not worrying about getting dirty. The feeling of a full heart filled with possibility, seeing a whole future ahead where no matter what I decide, I will be OK.
I released my first working prototype of this idea as part of my The Stories We Live collection series, and was so touched to see how many people resonated with the messages - so much so I have sold out the past 2 launches!
Dang, I'm incredibly humbled and honored to see how this crazy little idea that I had sitting around in my brain actually sprouted legs and walked!
My art is a reminder to come back to yourself - to give your people-pleasing a rest and truly love on yourself for once. To remind you of how absolutely worthy and amazing you already are- no matter what stage of life you’re in.
